OpenAI’s plans for its entry into the hardware market could be less ambitious than expected. According to a new leak, the company would be preparing a physical product for consumers, specifically wireless headphones.
The information comes from a leaker on the social network X, who claims that a recent patent application linked to OpenAI has been made public in China. This registration would confirm the trade name and point to a near launch of the product.
However, the most relevant thing is not the name, but the change in strategy that the company would be considering. According to the leak, OpenAI would have decided to postpone the launch of its most advanced versionpreviously described as a “phone-like” device due to the complexity of its internal hardware. Instead, the company would opt for a simpler first version, focused solely on audio, leaving the more powerful model for a later phase.
Previously, it had been suggested that high-end headphones would have a manufacturing cost comparable to that of a smartphone, with a very high bill of materials. It would not just be a headset with intelligent software, but a device with advanced computing capabilities, designed to execute artificial intelligence functions locally.
The reason for the change of course It would be related to the memory shortage and the increase in chip priceswhich would have increased costs to a level that is difficult to justify.
For this reason, OpenAI would be considering launching a more conventional version this year, with design and features similar to those of traditional wireless headphones. The most ambitious model, with greater calculation capacity and advanced AI functions, would be reserved for the future, when the component market is more favorable.
If this information is confirmed, the headphones would mark the entry of OpenAI into consumer hardware, although with a gradual and cautious approach: start with an accessible product and then go for the most advanced version.
