
Given the bottlenecks in traditional electrical networks, Europe begins to explore alternative solutions. One of the most innovative has just been launched in Ireland, where the continent’s first data center powered by an independent energy microgrid has been developed.
A new energy model for data centers
The project is located on the outskirts of Dublin and has been promoted by digital infrastructure developer Pure Data Center Group in collaboration with energy solutions provider AVK. The installation introduces an energy model called island mode, in which the data center can operate autonomously through its own microgrid.
Microgrids are localized energy systems capable of generating, storing and distributing electricity independently or complementary to the national grid. This type of infrastructure allows maintaining the electricity supply even when the main network has limitations or saturation.
The new Irish complex It has an approximate energy capacity of 110 megawatts, enough to power large workloads in the cloud and artificial intelligence applications.
The investment planned for the complete development of the data center reaches 1,000 million euros.
AVK’s executive director explained the context of this energy change. “As these data centers grow and we see AI workloads and that data become more of a feature in our daily lives, that only increases the pressure on the network. Europe tries to solve the energy bottleneck
The initiative comes at a key moment for the continent. The European Commission estimates that the modernization of electricity networks and energy infrastructure will require investments of close to 1.2 trillion euros before 2040. The rise of artificial intelligence, electric vehicles and industrial electrification are multiplying the demand for electricity.
In some countries, the development of new data centers has been slowed by the inability of electrical networks to absorb the increase in consumption. Ireland is one of the most obvious cases. In recent years, the country has imposed restrictions on new installations due to the high energy impact of these infrastructures.
Data centers already represent a significant part of national electricity consumption. The pressure on the energy system led Irish authorities to impose a temporary moratorium on new connections to the grid.
Ireland makes its energy policy more flexible
At the end of last year the Irish energy regulator decided to relax these restrictions. The change responded to the enormous economic potential represented by digital infrastructures and the growing international competition to attract technological investments.
However, even after the relaxation of the moratorium, many companies continue to face long waiting times to obtain connection to the national electricity grid.
The president of Pure Data Centers, Dawn Childs, explained that the microgrid made it possible to avoid this administrative blockage. “The alternative in Ireland was to wait, literally wait for an unknown time to get a network connection, and even today you can’t get a network connection. The design of the data center allows the facility to connect to the national grid in the future and provide energy flexibility. In that scenario, the complex could provide up to 20 megawatts of battery storage and provide dispatchable power to support the electrical system.
Flexible energy to sustain digital growth

The microgrid market gains prominence

Although this technology is already used in industrial facilities and energy communities, its application in data centers is still limited in Europe. In the United States, however, its adoption is much more advanced.
Technology and energy companies such as ABB, Siemens or Schneider Electric are developing specific solutions for this market. Siemens, for example, has noted that there are clear opportunities to implement microgrids in European data centers and that he already maintains conversations with several clients in the sector.
Investors interested in new energy infrastructure
The development of these infrastructures is attracting the interest of funds specialized in energy and digital assets. Some investors believe that microgrids could become a new asset class within the infrastructure market.

According to its forecasts, this type of projects could be consolidated in the next three to five years as the energy demand of data centers continues to grow.
