The Spanish company, with experience in security, assumes custody of cryptocurrencies.

The measure would prevent incidents such as the theft of crypto assets in judicial custody.
The Spanish Ministry of the Interior today awarded Prosegur custody of the bitcoin (BTC) and cryptocurrencies seized in police raids. The contract for 2.8 million euros (equivalent to about 3.24 million dollars) comes into effect in three months and lasts four years.
The agreement, published on the Public Sector Contracting Portal, covers cloud management and custody under the Cryptoasset Markets Law (MiCA).
The regulations for the regulation of Europe’s digital asset market do not establish a direct obligation for countries to hire crypto asset custodians (CASP) specifically to safeguard seizures or confiscations. However, the regulation regulates custody services in general, which forces Spain to select a company that is subject to MiCA regulation.
Although there is no evidence that Prosegur has yet obtained a license as a cryptoasset service provider, according to the list of the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV), the company is already actively exploring the sector. In addition, it should be taken into account that until December 30, 2025, existing suppliers can operate without a full license if they meet prerequisites.
The Spanish company provides custody of the cash of large institutions in the world among other security services. AND two years ago, the firm launched Prosegur Crypto.
«It is one of the initiatives that we started two years ago thinking that, if we are the custodians of the money in banknotes that exist in the world, in the same way we could be the custodians of cryptocurrencies or any tokenized asset.» This was explained by José Ángel Fernández Freire, the innovation director of Prosegur Cash in an interview with NoticiasVE.
In any case, there is no public and aggregated official record that details the exact total of bitcoin or cryptocurrencies seized by Spain until November 2025. Authorities, such as the Civil Guard and National Police, publish figures by individual operation in annual reports or communications, without a unified global counter.
As an example of this, in June of this year Spanish authorities reported the seizure of cryptocurrencies worth 490,000 euros, as reported by NoticiasVE at the time.
Spain has a long history of seizures of bitcoin and cryptocurrencies, driven by police operations against money laundering and organized crime. In April 2025, the country faced the theft of 17 million euros in digital assets that were in judicial custody in what was the country’s largest crypto asset operation to date. For this fact, an employee of the judicial administration was accused.
That is why now, with Prosegur at the helm, seizures could be managed with greater security, aligning the country with European Union standards.
