The National Bank of the Czech Republic (CNB) took an unprecedented step by acquiring digital assets for the first time, in an operation valued at one million dollars. According to the entity, the objective of the project is to obtain practical experience with cryptocurrency-based technologies and evaluate their possible role within the country’s financial system.

The bank explained that The investment was made outside of its international reserves and that does not seek to obtain profitability, but rather to test the technical and regulatory processes associated with the management of cryptoassets. The test portfolio includes bitcoin, a dollar-backed stablecoin and a tokenized deposit, which will allow the behavior and characteristics of different types of assets to be compared.

According to the entity’s governor, Aleš Michl, the initiative began in early 2025 as part of a strategy to study bitcoin from the perspective of a central bank.

Over time, the project expanded to cover other forms of digital money, with the objective of analyzing the future of payments and asset tokenization financial. “We want to be prepared for the changes that the digitalization of the economy will bring,” said Michl.

In addition, the official clarified that the Czech crown will continue to be the only legal tender in the country and that the bank will continue to focus on maintaining price stability. However, he highlighted that in the coming years new ways of investing and paying will emerge, and he does not even rule out that citizens can acquire tokenized Czech bonds, with the same ease with which they make an everyday purchase today.

The CNB specified that the limited size of This bitcoin and cryptocurrency portfolio avoids any impact on your monetary policy or in its ability to intervene in the exchange market.

The initiative was approved by the Bank’s Board on October 30, 2025, after analyzing the growth of institutional interest in digital assets. Although the CNB does not plan to incorporate them into its international reserves in the short term, it will publish the results of this experience in the next two or three years. This is a project that seeks to strengthen its technical capabilities and anticipate the digital transformation of the financial system.

The recent step by the Central Bank of the Czech Republic is part of a scenario of regulatory opening within the country. It is worth noting that, in February, President Petr Pavel enacted a law that establishes a clear framework for cryptoassets, aligned with the MiCA regulations and simplified tax rules.
