Today we are experiencing a very particular crisis related to RAM, something that is causing numerous electronic devices to increase in price.

In fact, in recent days the idea of organizing a kind of “RAM boycott” to put pressure on manufacturers and achieve lower prices has gained strength on social networks.

The proposal arose from a viral thread on Reddit, where some users argue that stopping buying memory modules would allow gamers to “save a fortune.”

In any case, It seems that the current situation of the RAM market shows that this strategy would have practically no impact.

The rise in RAM memory prices has generated concern among computer users. Although many point directly to the rise of artificial intelligence as responsible, the reality is more complex.

During the pandemic years, demand for RAM in the consumer sector fell sharply, forcing manufacturers to reduce their production and reallocate resources. Slower adoption of DDR5 also played a role, reducing demand for conventional memory modules.

As a result, when artificial intelligence skyrocketed the need for memory in data centers and cloud computing providers, the industry was not prepared to respond with sufficient capacity. In fact, most of the demand for RAM comes from the artificial intelligence sector, which consumes practically all the available volume.

So, in this context, if gamers stopped buying RAM, the impact would be minimal, given that manufacturers prioritize clients that ensure higher margins, which are the artificial intelligence giants, leaving the domestic market in the background.

Given this situation, the experts’ recommendation is to avoid impulsive decisions. Those who already have 8 or 16 GB of RAM can keep their equipment for a few more months to avoid paying extra prices.

For those who are building a complete PC, the current offers remain the best opportunity in the short term. Even purchasing a pre-assembled computer can be more cost-effective, as many do not yet reflect current memory increases.

Taking into account that experts suggest that tensions in memory supply could last until 2027, it is better to stick with the RAM currently in the computers.
