Netflix has confirmed that it will stop offering support for its official application on one of the most beloved consoles in the history of PlayStation: PlayStation 3.
This changeand will be effective from next March 2the date on which users will no longer be able to access the streaming service from this platform, ending a period that has lasted for almost two decades.
PlayStation 3 was launched in late 2006 and sold more than 88 million units before being withdrawn from the market. Despite a difficult start, Sony’s console ended up beating its main rival from Microsoft and establishing itself as one of the most remembered systems of its generation.
Although Sony’s official support for the PlayStation 3 ended in 2016, the console remained useful for many years thanks to its multimedia capabilities. For many homes, it became a true entertainment center, since in addition to functioning as a Blu-ray player, it offered access to streaming platforms such as Netflix.
It is striking that Netflix has kept its application active for so long, despite the fact that the use of the console as a streaming device was already very limited. For this reason, the closure of the application will probably have a low impact among the user community, given that it is a system that is hardly used for this purpose today.
Even so, those who still use the PlayStation 3, whether to enjoy classic games or occasionally as a multimedia player, will lose the ability to access Netflix from the console in the coming weeks. It should be remembered that the PS3 represented one of the last ways to watch Netflix natively on old televisions with 4:3 format.
In any case, this decision does not mean that the PlayStation 3 has become completely obsolete. The console continues to be a valid option to revive titles that marked an entire generation and that, more than a decade later, continue to awaken nostalgia in many players.
