We are just a few days after the official support for Windows 10, and Microsoft has already launched its extended security updates program (ESU) for all users worldwide, although with certain requirements.
However, if you live in the European Union, the news is much better: Microsoft has confirmed that extended security updates for Windows 10 will be available for free in the European Economic Space (EEE), No need to create a Microsoft account or synchronize cloud configurations.
Thanks to this measure, European users can continue to receive critical patches until October 14, 2026.
The company itself explained it in a statement: «In the European economic space we are making adjustments in the registration process to ensure that it meets local expectations and offer a safe and fluid experience. Our goal is to support customers and give them options while making the transition to Windows 11, with uninterrupted access to critical security updates.»
This rectification comes after criticism of consumer defense organizations, such as Euroconsumers, who questioned the initial approach of Microsoft within the framework of the Digital Markets Law.
Finally, Euroconsumers celebrated the decision: «We are pleased to know that Microsoft will provide a free option for extended security updates (ESU) for Windows 10 users in the European economic space. We also make us glad that this option does not force you to make configuration, applications or credentials, or use Microsoft Rewards.»
In practice, This means that Windows 10 European users will get an additional year of security support automatically, just registering in the extended update program from Windows Update.
Outside the EEE, the situation is different. Those who want to access the ESU must log in with a Microsoft account linked to the cloud, redeem Microsoft Rewards points or pay a quota.
