What is the most important non -technical skill or characteristic that seeks in a manager, beyond experience and knowledge?
The ability to execute and create a connected and efficient equipment.
Can that ability or skills be learned in a masterpower or postgraduate course?
Any course of a good school provides value, the important thing is to know if the cost compensates for the value contributed and that is not always guaranteed.
In a management team, do you prefer the diversity of profiles or cohesion based on similar experiences?
Diversity provides in general more value. Having different points of view, different sexes and nationalities provides values that otherwise do not have.
The directors of the big companies, are all well trained and with MBA in prestigious business schools. What common knowledge do they have and which can be differentiated depending on the school in which they have studied?
I believe that the country’s great business schools, IE, IESE, ESADE … have all a very good financial and business base. Some, such as EI, have a special emphasis on entrepreneurship.
What kind of mentality is looking for in a manager when the company faces a volatile market or a crisis?
Flexibility is the key. That they are able to listen, learn and, in many cases, unlearn.
Could you describe a situation in which a manager impressed or disappointed him completely? What did he do or stop doing?
I have many examples of both cases, in reality the ones that have impacted me the most are those that promise little and get a lot.
On the contrary, there are managers who promise a lot and do not meet anything, I call them executives «is that» and here you can put anything they use to justify their lack of performance.
An MBA or any other master, teaches the manager to take calculated risks versus his risk aversion or is that learned on a day -to -day basis?
I believe that a good MBA teaches you how to react in many current cases, but then you have to know how to use them under pressure and not everyone serves it.
What metrics do you use to judge the success of a manager?
Those that they have helped me to design. The best measurements are those that are made by mutual agreement and have a commitment on both sides.
To get this, I need these resources and I give them to them I want them to fulfill their part of the pact.
From your experience, which business school is better adapting to the new times of digitalization and artificial intelligence?
I think that the 3 greats that I have cited have very elaborate paradigm shift and are incorporating AI in all their courses.
And the students have changed what students who study a MBA are looking for?
Yes, I think that now there are business schools such as ISDI, more focused on current needs that offer less duration courses but much more focused on concrete solutions.
In the membership that you have daily, at https://www.rodolfocarpintier.com/ You talk a lot about the need to be prepared for change at any time and environment. What advice would you give to managers to face these changes?
You have to devote time to learn new things, use AI daily even if it is only as an executive secretary and be very careful with small companies that seem not to be a threat, but end up being.
You have to follow new business models that show great growth and provide a lot of value quickly.
