A while ago news emerged that left many a little perplexed: it said that artificial intelligence was going to make people dumber. It seemed like an overly categorical statement, but the truth is that it was based on data. The most curious thing about the matter? That the general perception of AI is going in that same direction, at least among generation Z.
Young people not only think that this technology can end up posing a workplace problem, which they do, and not without reason, but they consider that it can have a more profound impact. Will they be right and will artificial intelligence end up generating a more banal, less substantial society? Of course, there are reasons to fear it.
The prejudices of generation Z with artificial intelligence
In fact, there seems to be a contradiction, to begin with. This is stated by the prestigious newspaper The Guardian. The acceptance that ChatGPT and other similar artificial intelligence chatbots have among generation Z is enormous. Many users use it daily. But on the other hand, They have misgivings and believe that it makes everything «too easy.»
A bit like beating a game with tricks. What happens when that happens? Well, most of the time, players end up getting bored quickly. Without challenge, so to speak, there is no satisfaction afterwards. According to the published study, 80% of students say they use AI regularly for their different school assignments. Only a small 2% say they do not use it.
Looking at this data, the most normal thing would be to think that generation Z students are delighted with ChatGPT and so on. But it is not like that at all. 62% of students surveyed for the research believe that AI has a negative effect on their development and learning. They say that, deep down, «You get the answers without having done the work yourself». Which is true.
For example, they believe that writing (more or less creative) is no longer used as it was before, and that this is not a good thing. Also that something important is lost, not only in studies, but in life: analytical thinking. Something that many experts have been insisting on for some time. In other words: 12% have no doubt that artificial intelligence reduces their creativity.
Not everything has to be bad, after all
Despite the bad feelings that generation Z and specifically students have about artificial intelligence, it seems that not everything is negative. 18% of them say that ChatGPT can sometimes help them understand complicated problems more easily. And 15% consider that it serves to inspire new ideas.
Still, it’s not a big deal. And what is clear is that not only work, as is often said, but also education is going to experience an important change due to AI. Whether for better or worse, it is still difficult to know. Maybe time will reveal it at some point.
