American Express registers a net profit of 2,868 million dollars in the third quarter

American Express has announced an attributable net profit of $2,868 million (€2,457 million) in the third quarter of 2025, which represents an increase of 16% compared to the same period of the previous year. This solid performance has led the credit card and payment solutions company to revise its annual forecasts upwards.

Total net and interest income

American Express’ total net interest income in the third quarter reached $18,426 million (€15,789 million), showing an increase of 10.7%. Within this total, net interest income increased by 12%, reaching 4,486 million dollars (3,844 million euros).

Quarterly income from concepts other than interest and reduction in provisions

On the other hand, quarterly income from items other than interest margin amounted to 13,940 million dollars (11,945 million euros), reflecting an increase of 10%. In addition, the company managed to reduce the amount of provisions for risk of credit default by 5% in the quarter, standing at 1,287 million dollars (1,103 million euros).

Accumulated results and future projections

In the first nine months of 2025, American Express recorded attributable net profits of $8,272 million (€7,088 million), an increase of 5%. Net interest income in this period was 53,249 million dollars (45,629 million euros), 9% more, while provisions for credit defaults totaled 3,842 million dollars (329 million euros), 1% less.

Stephen J. Squeri, President and CEO of American Express, commented: «Given our strong performance so far this year, we are raising our full-year guidance to revenue growth of 9% to 10% and earnings per share of between $15.20 and $15.50.».
