According to people like Sam Altman, artificial superintelligence will be a blessing for humanity. Not only will it make life easier for everyone, but it will also solve scientific problems and even achieve feats such as enabling space conquest. However, there are those who radically disagree with this vision and demand exactly the opposite: prohibit it.

The debate is served, to the point that an initiative has already emerged that has precisely that goal: to prevent the evolution of AI from becoming a serious danger to humanity. To some experts who have been warning of the threat for some time, Now such media figures as Prince Harry of England have joined.

Objective: stop artificial superintelligence before it’s too late

In the history of great technological advances, there has been nothing comparable to artificial superintelligence. This technology does not yet exist and, according to some experts, will never exist as such. Others, however, believe that it is on its way and that it will become a reality around the year 2030. But even so, it already generates fear, debate and controversy in equal parts.

So much so, that A diverse group of personalities has already decided to sign a letter to demand its ban. The initiative, coordinated by the organization Future of Life Institute, is not made up of just anyone. To begin with, it is headed by AI specialists Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio, who have been warning about AI for years, and are considered «its parents.»

Without his scientific advances (which earned Hinton the Nobel Prize), artificial intelligence as we know it today would not exist. But they are not the only relevant people who have joined the cause. Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and successful businessman Richard Branson have also done it, among others. Now, in addition, Prince Harry of England and his wife Megan have joined.

And what exactly do they say in the letter? Well, AI, if it becomes «super», It would leave many people without jobs, massively, it would seriously endanger people’s freedoms, it would create inequality or it could even become a risk for humanity.. These are fears that have been on the table for some time, but they seem to be gaining more and more strength among many.

To what extent do you want to stop the evolution of AI? Will that be possible?

The truth is that all those who are part of this movement are emphatic: their demand is to prohibit the development of artificial superintelligence, that is clear. Forever? Well, maybe not. In your letter they talk about doing it until it «exists in a safe and controllable way». Of course, it’s hard to know when that might happen… if it ever happens.

The only thing there seems to be consensus on about AI right now is that there is no consensus. In fact, there is not even a shortage of experts who treat the topic with disdain and claim to be tired of hearing about artificial superintelligence. According to the latter, it will never become a reality, no matter what Sam Altman, Bill Gates, Elon Musk and company say.
