ChatGPT’s growth in mobile apps is starting to show signs of slowing, according to a report from market research firm Sensor Tower.
Although OpenAI’s product continues to lead the sector, with 50% of global mobile downloads and 55% of monthly active usersthe competition is getting closer than ever, especially Google Gemini. The latter has begun to surpass ChatGPT in downloads and is already close in active users and usage time in the application.
The increase in Gemini users could reduce ChatGPT’s advantage in the global market. This scenario led OpenAI to issue an internal memo, instructing its team to focus on improving its AI products, including personalization, reliability, and imaging.
Despite the competition, both services continue to grow globally. ChatGPT increased its monthly active users 180% year-over-year through November 2025, while Gemini grew 170% in the same period. However, if the most recent data (August-November) is analyzed, ChatGPT only increased by 6%reaching approximately 810 million monthly active users, suggesting some market saturation.
For its part, Gemini increased its users by 30% in the same perioddriven by the launch of its Nano Banana imaging model. The report also highlights that in the United States, Android users access Gemini directly from the operating system twice as often as through the app, giving Google a global competitive advantage.
Gemini too has increased its share in the artificial intelligence chatbot market against competitors such as Copilot, Claude, Perplexity and Grok. Between May and November 2025, Gemini increased its share of monthly active users by 3 percentage points, while ChatGPT lost the same proportion.
Other rivals, such as Perplexity and Claude, have also recorded notable growthwith year-on-year increases of 370% and 190%, respectively. In global downloads, ChatGPT grew 85% year-over-year, below the industry average of 110%, while Gemini and Perplexity saw increases of 190% and 215%.
Regarding the daily use time, Gemini doubled its average, reaching 11 minutes per userwhile ChatGPT only rose 6% and recorded a 10% drop in November compared to July.
