It is often said that whoever strikes first strikes twice. In that sense, no one can doubt that Sam Altman and OpenAI are well positioned to lead the revolution that artificial intelligence will entail (which perhaps already entails). However, perhaps ChatGPT parents would be mistaken to get too excited. Or that is at least what Cristiano Amon thinks.

According to the technology expert, AI has gigantic potential, of which we are still only seeing its first steps. He believes that this will be a long-term battle, and that at the moment it is too early to know which companies will finally emerge victorious, and which will not be so lucky. He does not rule out surprises along the way at all.

Amon asks Sam Altman caution with AI

Surely Cristiano Amon is not as popular in the media as Sam Altman, Bill Gates and other big names in the world of technology. But for those who don’t know, This is the CEO of Qualcomm, a leading company in producing semiconductors. Its importance with mobile phones has been key, and everything seems to indicate that the same is going to happen with artificial intelligence.

On the one hand, it is a more than authoritative voice on the matter; on the other, he is someone capable of reflecting in a way that is somewhat distant from the war to dominate AI that, in his opinion, is currently being experienced. A war that has only just begun. «Everyone is playing to win,» Amon says. However, he warns: «It’s still too early to tell who will triumph.»

During his time at the Fortune Global Forum, the businessman has been questioned about this. For him, it is logical to compare artificial intelligence with the Internet. If you look closely, he argues, the network today has little to do with how it was in the beginning. «Those who we expected to be the winners at the beginning… changed». The same could happen with AI at some point.

In other words: the Internet has taken more or less 25 years to establish itself, at least as far as winners and losers are concerned. It may be that in a couple of decades we will know how far the potential of AI reaches (or not), and which companies master it. But it is too early to, for example, consider OpenAI as winners. Amon hesitates: «They are well positioned, but…»

This has only just begun

Along the same lines, Cristiano Amon seems to want to explain to Sam Altman and all those who want to become the leaders of this technology, what they have to take into account. Marketing and popularity are important, of course, but not everything. He refers to AI as «a huge opportunity», but by no means free of great challenges.

The most important thing, he considers, is that companies have architectures capable of managing the demands of AI, which will not be exactly few. If they already require a huge investment to function as they do, when they exploit their full potential everything will multiply. And as they say, only the strongest will survive.
