The arrival of 5G has changed the telecommunications sector in Spain, although the industry giants continue working to adapt their infrastructure. Telefónica implemented this internet speed in September 2020 and its presence in the country has not stopped growing.
The company behind Movistar and O2 offers 5G coverage in more than 90% of the Spanish territory, according to the latest annual report. The deployment of this network has reached thousands of municipalities on the 700 MHz and 3,500 MHz frequenciesbut the company hopes to have a presence in all towns in the coming years.
Telefónica has become the company with the greatest implementation of 5G in Spain. Vodafone follows closely with its presence in 82% of the population at the end of 2024, which is equivalent to a total of 2,700 municipalities.
The company has assured in the statement that with this work they intend to contribute to the “development of coverage that allows offering ultra mobile broadband in practically the entire territory, both in rural and urban areas throughout Spain.”
Telefónica has increased its infrastructure with 5G+
The company has promoted the jump to the 700 MHz 5G band present in 3,585 Spanish municipalities, but seeks to increase speed at very low latency. The presence of 5G has not stopped growing in recent years, going from the initial 78% to currently exceeding 90%.
Some Movistar and O2 customers already enjoy 5G+ in the 3,500 MHz band, although its implementation is somewhat slower. This network has reached a total of 1,500 Spanish municipalities with coverage in the 3,500 MHz bandwhich represents a growth of 50% in the last six months.
Telefónica intends to compete with other industry giants with the parallel deployment of the FTTH fiber network to bring high speed to all homes. The company also leads the implementation of indoor connectivity in Spain.
