Generation Z has a problem: they are experts with mobile phones, but they don’t know how to use these very basic skills

Everyone considers that members of generation Z, i.e. those born between 1997 and 2009 are experts in technology. They are not lacking in reason. Most of them are very attached to devices like mobile phones, which have always been there for them, but that does not mean that the same thing happens with everything.

In fact, as some experts report, young people are less knowledgeable about basic tools than some of the members of previous generations were. Perhaps even the immediacy or convenience that new technologies usually bring are partly to blame for this happening. Worst? That the future, with AI involved, does not seem better.

Generation Z and its technological limitations

The fact that generation Z is expert in the use of mobile phones and similar devices does not mean that do not have adequate technological preparation, at least from a work point of view. This is what the American media points out, in a fairly broad sense. To begin with, it is striking that they are not familiar with tools like Word or Excel.

This is something that is already being translated into a practical sense. As explained on the DPM portal, many companies They do not show a special interest in hiring people of generation Z, but rather the other way around. And, contrary to what one might think, much of the blame lies with technology. In fact, it is the main reason given by those responsible for making this decision.

Those in charge of hiring young people are clear: the main problems of generation Z are the following: lack technological skills (39%), have a tendency to struggle rather little (37%) and lack motivation (37%). As much as generalizing is not usually a good idea, the data is there, and it helps to see where things are going.

Of course, this is not the first time these types of statistics have emerged. Not long ago an investigation reached a very similar conclusion: many young people were unable to use a printer. Or there is even no shortage of those who go further and think that the new generations are forgetting something much more basic: writing by hand, with all that that entails.

A not very hopeful future

Of course, attacking youth may seem too advantageous, and it probably is, but there is also no shortage of those who point precisely to the fact that situation could become complicated in the future as a consequence of AI. If many young people seem to lack knowledge today, perhaps this technology requires them to learn even less.

That, of course, as long as people like Elon Musk are not right and within a few years artificial intelligence will have removed us all from the world of work, transforming us into little more than pensioners. If it were to be like this, what would it matter? However, for now all that sounds too far away, despite everything.
