Those from Mountain View face a problem that is repeated more and more frequently among the technological giants of Silicon Valley. Google is once again accused of using sensitive user information to train its AI.

Gemini has taken a leap forward with new features powered by artificial intelligence, but this has consequences for users. Google may be violating your privacy.

The cybersecurity company Malwarebytes has warned in a post on its blog. The technology giant is accessing users’ private messages and files to train its AI models.

Google may be reading your messages

Malwarebytes experts confirm that Google could be reading users’ Gmail messages after the arrival of the latest AI features. Gemini is smarter than ever, but at the cost of access to contacts, thousands of emails and files.

«The way Google recently rewrote and rolled out features led many people (including us) to believe that Gmail content could be used to train Google’s AI models, and that users were being automatically enrolled,» Malwarebytes confirms.

History repeats itself once again in Silicon Valley. Other industry giants such as Meta, LinkedIn or even OpenAI, behind ChatGPT, face a similar problem in the treatment of users’ private information.

Gemini protects user data

Google is once again defending itself against accusations of privacy violations. A company spokesperson confirms that these accusations are «misleading» and its artificial intelligence «has not changed anyone’s settings.»

Those from Mountain View have settled the controversy once and for all. “Gmail Smart Features has been around for many years, and we do not use your Gmail content to train our Gemini AI model,” according to the spokesperson, “we are always transparent and clear if we make changes to our terms of service and policies,” he adds.

Other platforms such as SoundCloud and WeTransfer have not managed to avoid the controversy of artificial intelligence training. Both have been discovered updating their terms to train their AI models with users’ content without their consent.
