Earlier this year, Google announced that it would replace its classic assistant with Gemini on all Android phones, eliminating the option to continue using Assistant by the end of 2025.
However, with the end of the year, Google has updated its plans and decided to relax the deadline. The transition will continue throughout 2026 to ensure users experience a smooth and seamless changeover.
Instead of forcing all users to migrate to Gemini immediately, the company has chosen to take more time to perfect the experience, ensuring that devices that rely on Assistant can successfully upgrade. This update mainly affects mobile phones, but also smart watches and headphones.
At the moment, Google Home users are already beginning to experience the transition.
The postponement provides additional time to evaluate how older or lower-capacity devices will perform, where it is not yet clear whether they will be able to support Gemini.
Google hasn’t set a concrete timeline for completing the migration, but it at least takes the pressure off the late 2025 deadline.
For users, this means they won’t lose access to Assistant immediately and will be able to continue using it as Google continues to roll out Gemini gradually throughout 2026.
