The American investment fund management company, Grayscale, filed this Friday, March 20, 2026 with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) an S-1 form to launch the Grayscale HYPE ETF. This is an exchange-traded fund (ETF) project that would replicate the price of Hyperliquid’s native token, HYPE. If approved, the product would be listed on the Nasdaq under the ticker GHYP.

The fund, if approved by the SEC, would be established as a Delaware statutory trust and would function as a passive investment vehicle: Its only objective would be to reflect the value of the HYPE in the portfolioless management costs.

According to the preliminary prospectus, Coinbase would act as custodian of the assetswhile The Bank of New York Mellon would serve as administrator and transfer agent. The reference price would be calculated through the CoinDesk Hyperliquid Benchmark Extended Rate index, evaluated daily at 4:00 pm New York time.

The document clarifies that The fund will not have initial stakingand. In any case, Grayscale contemplates the possibility of incorporating it in the future – under what the prospectus calls a «Staking Condition» – but warns that there are no guarantees that this condition will be met.

Grayscale is not the first manager to target HYPE. The firms 21Shares and Bitwise already submitted similar requests at the end of 2025, as reported by NoticiasVE. However, Grayscale’s institutional weight gives particular visibility to today’s ETF filing.

It is worth mentioning that the Hyperliquid exchange is prohibited to US users, although the recently created Hyperliquid Policy Center is working on initiatives to lobby before Congress to modify that situation.

The SEC will have to review the application before the fund can go public. There are no confirmed deadlines for a resolution.

Why would launching an ETF be important for Hyperliquid?

The approval of an ETF would represent a qualitative leap for Hyperliquid in terms of visibility and perception of legitimacy.

Listing on the Nasdaq would mean that HYPE would appear on Bloomberg screens, brokerage traditional and portfolios of managers who today do not even consider assets that are not within a regulated structure.

To a protocol that until now operates on the margins of the cryptocurrency ecosystem —banned to American users and without a presence in the dominant institutional channels—that exposure would be difficult to replicate through any other means.

Furthermore, the vehicle ETF would eliminate the main frictions that today keep institutional capital away from HYPE: the need to manage wallets and private keys, the absence of custodians with a recognized reputation, and the incompatibility with the investment mandates of pension funds, family offices and regulated asset managers.

With Coinbase as custodian and BNY Mellon as administrator, the Grayscale HYPE ETF would present all the characteristics of a product suitable for institutional portfolios, which could open latent demand from an investor segment that today does not have operational access to the token.

However, history warns against automatic enthusiasm. The launch of an ETF does not guarantee a price increase. The approval of an ETF expands the universe of possible investors, but it does not determine whether or when those investors will actually buy.

Actual demand will ultimately depend on the fundamentals of the protocol and the broader macroeconomic context.
