A new Apple computer has arrived. Actually three. iMac with M4, MacBook Pro with M4 and the renewed Mac mini with M4. And although there were rumors and leaks, the surprise of the Mac mini redesign has been surprising.
The previous Mac mini was compact if we take into account that the closest thing for Apple was a laptop, although as always happens in this company it usually arrives late, since mini PCs with Windows have had this format for quite some time.
But Apple is Apple and has shown off an aluminum Mac mini that feels and looks premium, with performance per square centimeter worth mentioning.
This redesign is possibly one of the best features that this computer has, in addition to its performance because the M4 chips are demonstrating performance well above the previous range.
In a really compact size, Apple has managed to fit a powerful M4 and M4 Pro chip, plus a 150W power supply, even USB-C ports to go around. As I said in my review, without a doubt what it lacks is an SD card reader, which the Mac Studio does have.
Even so, 5 USB-C ports compatible with USB 4. Thunderbolt 4 or Thunderbolt 5 if you choose the version with M4 Pro, are more than enough for practically 99% of the needs of most users who are looking for a compact computer, Powerful and easy to hide.
Is it a computer to show or hide?
The good thing about mini PCs is that they are so compact that once connected to your monitor, keyboard and mouse, even to a peripheral such as a webcam if your monitor does not have one integrated, it is easy to hide.
Why have a computer, no matter how small, on your desk when you can mount it behind the monitor or in a drawer? You lose direct access to the ports, but if you set up a good setup on your desk, you can end up with a clean and more organized workspace.
Are 5 USB-C ports enough? Obviously it will depend on the needs of many people, but during my time of use I have only used two ports, a rear one to connect my webcam and a front one for an external SSD drive that I use for large projects.
Of course, what I can assure you is that you will need, at some point, a USB-A to USB-C adapter. The good news is that there are several very cheap ones on Amazon, like these two adapters for less than 8 euros.
