LG has introduced what it calls a lifetime guarantee in all its washing machines and refrigerators in Spain.which provides 30 years of technical service, repairs and replacements, and is the latest step in its Smart Green sustainability strategy.

The South Korean manufacturer assures that it has been fighting against planned obsolescence in household appliances for 25 years, as well as in other fields of sustainability such as energy efficiency.

It was the first to add a 10-year warranty on washing machines and also one of the first to take measures against microplastics, with also measures to reduce consumption in refrigerators such as Insta View and in dryers such as the dual heat pump.

The lifetime warranty is another step in this race for efficiency and durability. “The most durable product is the most sustainable. All LG refrigerators and washing machines have a lifetime warranty,” as stated by Miguel Ángel Fernández, head of Marketing at LG Spain, at a press event organized this Thursday in Madrid.

LG Lifetime Warranty is equivalent to a 30-year warrantyas the company has specified.

“We have not yet managed to manufacture products that do not fail, so we have a network of technicians that allows us to guarantee that the average repair time is less than 4 days, including weekends and holidays. We try to ensure that the products always have the best possible software to guarantee the best possible functionality,” according to Sergio Novajarque, head of Customer Value Innovation (technical service) at LG Spain.

This measure seeks to combat planned obsolescence. Household appliances account for 82% of the weight of waste managed by ECOTIC in Spain, responsible for the recycling of electronic products.. In total, 252.00 tons of household appliances were processed in Spain alone in 2023, of which washing machines, refrigerators and ovens are the vast majority.

Of all the devices that make up electronic waste, only 22% are currently managed correctly.

LG is always committed to repairing products, but in cases where it has to replace an appliance under warranty, it always opts for reconditioning the product and reusing the components that are in good condition to give them a second life.

The South Korean company has the objective of reducing the use of rare earths and reincorporating plastics in the production process of its devices, with more than 90,000 tons before 2030. In the case of motors, they have a 0.2% rate of failure, while in compressors it is 3%.

“If we are able to convince users, we will be able to change things. If we only do it from above, the problem will remain, and that is the great challenge at a sustainability level,” added Jaime de Jaraíz, president and CEO at LG Electronics Iberia. .
