Microsoft has updated its list of obsolete functions in Windows versions to notify about a series of elements of the operating system that are in the process of elimination.
On this occasion, they have decided to discontinue several inherited web components, mainly related to EDGEHTML and web applications in Windows 8 and 8.1.
Do not worry, this will not affect the most popular functions of the system, but to technologies that have become obsolete over time.
Among the components that will be discontinued are Legacy Web Viewapplications HTML/JavaScript de Windows 8/8.1/UWP, Progressive Web Apps (PWA) inherited and Microsoft Edge Legacy (Edgehtml) development tools.
These elements no longer receive active development, since they depend on Edgehtml, the engine that promoted the original Microsoft Edge browser in the Windows 10 era, before the company adopted Chromium as the basis of its new Edge browser.
With this, Microsoft is recommending, especially developers, migrating to modern technologies: Webview2, Progressive Web Apps based on Chromium and other compatible web solutions.
In any case, Microsoft has not yet announced an exact date for the end of the support or when these components will be eliminated in future versions of Windows.
The company has formalized its depreciation, indicating that these elements will no longer receive new functionalities.
The Microsoft support document explains that these elements, built on the engine EdgeHTMLthey are no longer in active development and are in the process of elimination.
This is part of a Microsoft trend to modernize Windows, which has recently included the discontinuation of other functions such as WMIC and Powershell 2.0.
