Gemini, Google’s artificial intelligence, has taken a step forward in its integration with Android, allowing users to interact directly with PDF documents.
This feature, announced at the Google I/O 2024 event, is now available in the beta version of the Google Files app (16.0.5). It allows users to access relevant information in long documents without having to search for them manually.

How to use the new Gemini feature
The new feature makes it easier to interact with PDF files seamlessly. Now, When you open a document in the Google Files viewer, you will find the so-called “Ask about this PDF” in the Gemini overlay, according to the media 9to5google. This button allows you to upload the file to ask questions about its content.
For example, if you have a technical manual or contract, you can ask the AI about specific points, such as “What is the deadline mentioned?” Once the file is uploaded, Gemini delivers clear and precise responses, keeping the PDF visible in the background for added convenience.

To use the function, access the document from the Google Files app. When the AI is activated, you will see “Ask about this PDF” appear. Click on it. Next, upload the file and then type your query in the text field and submit it.
Gemini will respond by displaying your answers in a window overlaid on the document. You can continue asking more questions related to the content.
This feature is similar to uploading a file directly to the AI appbut now the process is seamlessly integrated within Google Files, eliminating the need to switch apps.
Although the feature is promising, it has some restrictions. It’s currently only available in the Google Files app and not in the Google Drive viewer, where Gemini only offers its generic “Ask about this screen” feature.
Besides, This tool is reserved for Gemini Advanced userswho have access to more advanced features of the model, such as a larger context window for analyzing long documents.
For now, PDF support is limited to Android and requires Google Files beta version 16.0.5. However, the company plans to expand its availability in future updates.
