There is no doubt that the fintech sector is experiencing a moment of absolute redefinition. The large technological platforms that were born as payment intermediaries have been expanding their scope of action for years, increasingly approaching functions traditionally reserved for banking.

In this context, PayPal Holdings’ latest move marks a relevant turning point for the American financial ecosystem.

The company has begun the process to establish its own banking entity in the United States, a decision that not only reflects its strategic ambition, but also a change in the regulatory environment.

The initiative occurs in a context in which the country’s authorities show a more favorable attitude towards financial innovation, which is encouraging numerous fintech firms to take similar steps.

A request with strategic implications

The company based in San José has formally submitted an application with the Utah Department of Financial Institutions and with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation to create an entity under the industrial loan company model.

This type of license allows you to offer certain banking services without becoming a traditional bank for all purposes.

If the regulator gives the green light, the new entity would operate as PayPal Bank and would allow the company to directly control activities that until now depended on external partners.

This change means a significant advance in its vertical integration and greater operational autonomy within the US financial system.

The boost of credit to small businesses

One of the main objectives of this movement is to strengthen the supply of financing to small and medium-sized companies. Since 2013, the company has channeled more than $30 billion in loans and capital solutions for this segment, relying on its transactional database and its risk analysis capacity.

With its own banking entity, the group could optimize these processes, improve operational efficiency and expand the reach of its credit products. Management has stressed that access to financing continues to be one of the main barriers to the growth of small businesses in the United States, especially in expansion phases.

New financial products on the horizon

In addition to credit, The creation of the bank would open the door to new lines of business. Among them stands out the possibility of offering paid savings accounts to private clientsa service that would strengthen the direct relationship with users and increase retention within the platform ecosystem.

This type of product would allow the company to compete more directly with traditional financial entities and with neobanks that already operate with similar structures.

The move would also facilitate more efficient management of deposits and liquidity, reducing dependence on third parties for key functions.

A more favorable regulatory environment

The request does not occur in isolation. Since the beginning of this year, there has been a notable increase in requests for banking licenses by fintech and crypto companies.

Trump’s return to the White House has coincided with a regulatory approach more oriented toward growth and reducing barriers to innovation.

Recently, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency has granted preliminary approvals to large players in the digital asset sector to establish national trust banks. These types of decisions point to greater integration of new financial technologies within the formal banking system.

The trend towards integrated banking

The step taken by PayPal fits into a broader trend of convergence between technology and banking. Payment platforms already manage transaction volumes comparable to those of large financial entities, They have millions of active users and have detailed information on consumption and business patterns.

Becoming a bank allows you to take advantage of these advantages more directly, although it also implies assuming greater regulatory, supervisory and capital requirements. Still, many companies find that the balance between control, efficiency and scalability offsets these challenges.

To lead the new project, the company has appointed Mara McNeill as president of the future entity.
