The Rutas del Este consortium, made up of Sacyr Concessions by 60% and Eight A by 40%, has begun the construction of the concession project for the new access to Asunción, the capital of Paraguay. This initiative’s main objective is to improve connectivity between the capital and inland cities, with an estimated investment of 180 million dollars (153 million euros).
The project consists of the creation of a structuring road network that includes significant works such as the Ypacaraí-Areguá bypasses and a 3.6-kilometer elevated urban highway. This highway will have two carriageways and four lanes, in addition to two new connections to the PY02 route, which will help speed up traffic in the area.
The president of Paraguay, Santiago Peña, together with the Minister of Public Works and Communications, Claudia Centurión, started the works this week. During the event, the president highlighted that this infrastructure will benefit the entire country by adding two access roads that will help decongest traffic on the main artery through which 80% of national commerce circulates.
It should be noted that the Rutas del Este consortium has already had previous experience in the country, being responsible for the concession of the duplication and expansion of Route PY02, which covers 151 kilometers and required an investment of 520 million dollars (443 million euros). This route came into operation in 2023 and the new access to Asunción represents an expansion of its capacity and layout.
This project is positioned as one of the most relevant in road matters in the Eastern Region of Paraguay and is the first to be executed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) modality in the country. The road will extend from kilometer 36 of the city of Ypacaraí to kilometer 187 of the town of Caaguazú.
The concession covers the design, financing, construction, maintenance and operation of the road over 30 years, which guarantees a long-term commitment to the development and efficient management of this important infrastructure in Paraguay.
