The presidents of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) of the United States announced the relaunch of “Project Crypto.” This joint initiative seeks to harmonize regulatory approaches, eliminate jurisdictional fragmentation, and prepare the ground for digital asset legislation currently moving through Congress.

During the meeting, announced last week as reported by NoticiasVE, Paul Atkins, president of the SEC, highlighted that inter-institutional cooperation is vital to ending the «turf wars» of the past.

Atkins emphasized that the goal is to “implement clear and principled rules for cryptoasset markets,” ensuring that the job of regulators is “to apply the minimum effective dose of regulation, no more and no less.”

For his part, Michael Selig, president of the CFTC, pointed out that The fragmented supervision model is no longer sustainable in the digital age. According to Selig, the previous administration chased headlines with punitive actions, while the current approach is focused on clarity.

“Project Cripto aims to address—and, where possible, eliminate—these conflicts,” he stated. He added that “market participants should not be forced to register duplicate agencies or sets of regulations to offer economically similar products.”

Focus on efficiency and decentralized technology

The initiative places special emphasis on how technology linked to cryptocurrencies is transforming the structure of the markets. Atkins acknowledged that “trading, clearing, custody and risk management now flow across asset classes, technologies and platforms.” Which makes isolated regulation a source of confusion for investors.

Selig agreed on the need to modernize surveillance tools to reflect on-chain activity. Which puts the highlight on a highly sensitive topic such as privacy.

“We must act quickly to update our rules and regulations and adapt to blockchain technology, digital assets and upcoming legislation, or risk ceding these emerging markets to foreign regimes,” he warned. And he pointed out that, if clarity is not provided, innovation will migrate outside of American soil.

This agreement between both regulatory entities does not alter the existing jurisdictional limits, but establishes a roadmap so that, once Congress approves a federal framework, agencies act in a coordinated manner.

The ultimate goal, according to both officials, is to consolidate United States leadership in the global financial system.

«The future of finance will be built somewhere. Through Project Crypto, we can help ensure it is built here in the US,” Atkins concluded. Thus, underlining that the stability of assets like bitcoin depends on a predictable and fair legal environment.
