Telefónica agrees on a 'social framework' with the unions amid ERE rumors

Telefónica has closed an agreement with the unions UGT y CCOO for the first ‘social framework‘ of the company, which was created with the objective of unifying the rights and commitments of all the group’s employees in Spain, regardless of the agreement that applies to them individually. The pact comes at a time when rumors of a new Employment Regulation File (ERE) are surfacing.

As explained by UGT in a statement, the agreement reached aims to «place people at the center of the transformation process that Telefónica faces, guaranteeing equality, cohesion, stability in employment and professional development in a context of profound technological and organizational changes.»

The pact is articulated around several strategic axes, which include the organization of people, territorial cohesion, artificial intelligence and employment observatory, attraction and retention of talent, consolidation of new forms of work, ‘reskilling’ and ‘upskilling’, and equality, diversity and inclusion.

UGT has highlighted that this agreement represents a strategic instrument of stability, cohesion and progress, directly linked to Telefónica’s new strategic plan that will be presented on November 4. In addition, it reinforces the union’s commitment to social dialogue and the future of employment in the technology sector.

Telefónica sources have indicated that both the company and the unions agree that The Spanish telecommunications market is in a stage of maturity and saturation, characterized by intense competition.. In this context, the telecom considers that the new ‘social framework’ is consolidated as a strategic instrument that reflects «firm progress, the result of dialogue and collaboration, towards an organization prepared to face the future with solidity.»

«With this social framework, Telefónica reaffirms its commitment to continuous work alongside worker representatives, highlighting the consensus reached in each of its companies, essential pillars to continue building a more sustainable, competitive and cohesive company,» added Telefónica.

Although information emerged about the possibility of a new ERE for around 6,000 workers within the framework of Telefónica’s new strategic plan, the company has clarified that this proposal is not currently on the table. Union sources indicate that the company has not yet contacted worker representatives about this, but it is likely to be addressed once the new strategic plan is presented and after the election of union representatives in two company subsidiaries.
