A group of scientists from the University of Maryland (United States) is “mapping” the Atlas of Human Gases (Human Flatus Atlas), and for this they invite everyone to participate. They send you a Smart Underwear, a wearable that you should put on your underwear or panties. It is the Fitbit of fartsas they call it.
It is inevitable that some laughter will escape, but this is a scientific project of great importance, because The wind can be used to measure intestinal health and the quality of the microbiome. So many volunteers have volunteered that they have had to open a waiting list.
The reality is that we know almost nothing about human flatulence. For example, current writings indicate that, on average, a person drops around 13 shells a day. But the first measurements with Smart Underwear indicate that the average is 30.
A wearable on your butt to measure gases
As you can see in the photo above, the fart sensor is shaped like a buttonand is placed on the outside of the underwear, secured by a clasp or plug.
Contrary to what you might think, it is not placed in the anus area, but rather at the bottom, between the legs. It is only correctly placed if you do not notice it when sitting or walking.
The experiment lasts three days. You have to put on the Smart Underwear before having breakfast, and it is worn for twelve hours. All the food you eat should be photographed, so that researchers can study how it influences gases.
I’m no scientist, but I find it strange that this wind sensor is only used during the day. Perhaps it is a first phase of the creation of this Atlas of Human Gasesand in a second they focus on flatulence during sleep.
At the end of the session, after washing it with an aromatic wipe that is included in the kit, Smart Underwear It is placed on the charger, which also serves to send the collected data to an app, via Bluetooth.
This is top-level research, because until now there are no massive studies on human gases. These scientists from the University of Maryland want to discover the relationship between wind and the food eaten, the time and amount eaten, intestinal health and the microbiome of our stomach.
These data could be used to identify possible diseasesor measure the quality of the intestinal flora, and take measures to repair it.
Smart Underwear, the Fitbit of fartsis not for sale, but if the creation of the Human Gas Atlas is a success, do not rule out its commercialization…
