Today some internal Amazon documents have been leaked to the press, reflecting thePlans to replace 600,000 jobs humans for robots between now and 2033only in the United States, despite the fact that they expect sales to double. With this replacement they aim to earn 30 cents per order.
To soften the negative impact on society, the documents talk about not using words like «automation» or «artificial intelligence» in their press releases and statements, opting for neutral terms like «advanced technology.»
These documents also advise not using the word «robot», but rather «cobot», to convey the (false) idea that robots collaborate with humans.
As revealed by the media The New York Timesvia The Vergein these papers it is indicated that Amazon’s goal is to automate 75% of the company by 2027saving the hiring of 160,000 workers, in the United States alone. With the use of robots, they hope to save $12.6 billion between now and 2027.
A dark future for Amazon workers
The North American newspaper has asked the Nobel Prize winner in Economics, Daron Acemoglu, for his opinion, and it could not be more somber: «No one has more incentive than Amazon to find a way to automate. Once they discover how to do it profitably, it will also spread to other companies.»
And he warns: «If Amazon achieves its automation goal, one of the largest employers in the United States will become a net destroyer of jobs.»
Amazon has around 1.5 million employees worldwide. In Spain it reaches the figure of 28,000 workers.
Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel sent a statement to The Vergeensuring that This information is only the opinion of an Amazon team, not the company itself.: «Leaked documents often provide an incomplete and misleading picture of our plans, and that is the case here.»
Here’s the excuse: «In our written narrative culture, thousands of documents circulate throughout the company at any given time, each with varying degrees of accuracy and timeliness. We are actively hiring at operating facilities across the country and have recently announced plans to fill 250,000 jobs by the holiday season.»
Kelly Nantel talks about plans in 2025, not 2027 or 2033…
The reality is that in recent years, we have seen how technology companies, all of them, have fired hundreds of thousands of workers. They certainly don’t have a tradition of protecting human jobs, and they will only use us as long as they need us. As the Nobel Prize in Economics says, As soon as they find a profitable way to automate, it’s over.…
