The Pentagon has taken an important step in the integration of artificial intelligence in military operations with the launch of GenAI.mila generative artificial intelligence platform that will initially use Google Cloud Gemini as its first available tool.

According to the Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseththis initiative is designed to make “our fighting force more lethal than ever.”

«The future of American warfare is here, and it is written with AI. As technologies advance, so do our adversaries. But at the War Department we are not standing idly by,» Hegseth said.

The secretary added that the Pentagon “will continue to aggressively deploy the best technology in the world to increase the lethality of our forces.”

Google, for its part, highlighted in its statement that Gemini can also be used for tasks less related to combat within the government, such as improving internal searches, summarizing policy manuals, generating checklists or creating risk assessments for operational planning.

The company clarified that the platform will only be used for unclassified workand that the processed data will not be used to train Google’s public models.

This move fits with Google’s change of stance regarding the military use of artificial intelligence, something that many already anticipated after the company eliminated one of its AI principles in February, which previously prohibited the use of the technology in potentially harmful applications. With this change, the door was open to future collaborations with defense organizations.

In any case, the use of AI in the military field continues to be a controversial issue. Still, many artificial intelligence companies are finding in these government agreements a clear path to monetize and scale their models.
