With decades of experience in giants such as Microsoft, Telefónica and Vodafone, and more than 40 patents behind them, Nuria Oliver directs the Ellis Alicante Foundation and is one of the most influential voices when talking about the future of artificial intelligence.

In a recent interview, the scientist made it clear that madness and that love for AI is not new: «It makes us feel as gods,» he says, making it clear that creating machines that think and act as humans is an ancient dream. But now, all this seems to have a certain impact not so positive on the lives of many.

Despite this, it is clear and we will not be able to advance and put an end to the great problems of this planet – from climate change to diseases – without artificial intelligence. «We need it to survive as a species,» he says.

The truth is that it does not exaggerate, since, as you will know, today AI is behind medical, energy and scientific advances that previously seemed impossible. The problem is that, along with its pros, the AI also puts large cons on the table.

«25% of jobs will be directly affected, but new professions will also emerge»

Oliver makes it quite clear that AI can be an ally for a better world, but confesses that, until now, the sector has worked as a ‘wild west’. The lack of regulation has left development in the hands of large companies that, many times, have prioritized the benefit of ethics.

«Just as we regulate food or medicines, we must regulate AI,» he explains. But, as it has already made it clear on other occasions, it is not about putting obstacles to research, but about controlling how these advances impact society.

But the most worrying, according to Oliver, are biases: «Humans have about 200 cognitive biases, and AI not only learns them, but also amplifies them.» When these systems are used in justice, health or employment, they can discriminate much more than people.

The race towards general artificial intelligence

And how could it be otherwise, it has talked about employment and that potential change that will reach many jobs for AI. He considers that manual works are not only in danger, but also cognitive, those that require analysis, judgment and creativity.

Of course, in this field the waters are quite moved and there are two clear sides formed, some more optimistic than others. Precisely mentioning these, already differentiated from the general public, which shows more fear, professionals who investigate or work with Ia believe that this technology will improve work and grow the economy.

56% of experts believe that the AI effect will be positive in the United States in the next 20 years, compared to the low 17% of American adults who think the same.

Bill Gates saying no to artificial intelligence

Some profiles have many ballots to be replaced by automated systems or algorithms. According to the report, these are the most vulnerable jobs to the advance of AI:

  • ATMs: 73% of experts believe they will disappear with payment automation and increase in self -service.
  • Truck drivers: 62% provides for their disappearance with the arrival of autonomous vehicles.
  • Journalists and factory workers: 60% believe that their tasks will be increasingly automated.
  • Software Engineers: Even this technical profile, in the safest theory, is on the list with 50%.

But be careful because there are always surprises and, without going any further, it has been known that reality has been very different in some sectors, such as customer service, because users face generic responses, repetitive circuits and a constant sensation of speaking with a wall.

Some large companies, such as Iberia, decided to go further and trust in AI systems for customer service. The result has been a flood of complaintsdue to little useful responses, inability to solve cases outside the script and users who end up more angry than at the beginning, according to The economist.

According to Gartner data, almost half of the companies that initially bet on reducing template in customer service are abandoning that idea, because they have not achieved the results they expected.

Automation works to solve simple doubts, but when it comes to complex cases, delicate claims or frustrated clients, empathy and understanding can only be offered by humans.
