The president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, has announced his intention to implement economic measures that will impact trade relations with Mexico, Canada and China. In a message posted on his Truth Social platform, Trump has announced the imposition of a 25% tariff on “all” imports from Mexico and Canada. In addition, it has indicated that it will increase by 10% the taxes already applied to products imported from China.

According to Trump’s statements, the imposition of the 25% tariff on products entering the United States from Mexico and Canada will be carried out as one of his first executive orders once he assumes the presidency on January 20. The president has based this decision on the problems of illegal immigration, crime and drug trafficking that, according to him, are perpetuated through open borders.

Trump has expressed concern about the presence of “thousands of people” crossing Mexico and Canada into the United States, alleging that this flow contributes to rising levels of crime and drugs in the country. The president-elect has urged his neighbors to the north and south to address this situation effectively to avoid the consequences of not doing so.

10% increase in tariffs on Chinese products

In addition to the measures taken with respect to Mexico and Canada, Trump has announced a 10% increase in the tariffs that Chinese imports already face. This decision is based on the need for China to stop the flow of drugs to the United States, especially fentanyl.

The president has mentioned that, despite China’s promises to apply the death penalty to drug traffickers, the flow of illicit substances to the United States has not decreased. Trump has stressed the importance of controlling this problem and has indicated that additional tariffs will remain in place until significant progress is made in the fight against drug trafficking from China.

In summary, the measures announced by Donald Trump demonstrate his focus on border security and the fight against drug trafficking as priorities in his economic agenda. The imposition of higher tariffs on Chinese products and imports from Mexico and Canada mark a new chapter in trade relations between the United States and these countries.
