As you will surely know, next October 2025 will mark a before and after for millions of computers worldwide. Microsoft will stop supporting most Windows 10 versions, and the transition to Windows 11 is being much more complicated than it seemed.
The problem is not only technical: there are up to 400 million PC that, due to hardware requirements, cannot be updated to the new version. AND Although Microsoft has announced some ‘aids’ to soften the blow, the general feeling is angry and, in too many cases, resignation.
The last play of the Redmond has been to offer the first year of extended security updates (ESU) free … but only if you are a private user and accept some conditions, such as synchronizing your data in the cloud or redeeming Microsoft Rewards points.
For companies and schools, the price is still $ 61 per device, and will rise every year. Of course, if you do not want to pay, the alternative is clear: or change to Windows 11 (if you can), or you run out of patches and your PC becomes an easy target for any cybercrime.
Microsoft turns on the torches and users and experts criticize the ‘patch’ for Windows 10
Criticisms have not been waiting and Lucas Rockett Gutterman, from the Pirg Defense Group, summarizes it: «Microsoft options are not enough and they will not solve the problem of the millions of PC that cannot be updated to Windows 11». We have been asking the company for years to expand the Windows 10 support and reduce the hardware requirements for Windows 11, but the answer has been void.
Anger is not just what this costs, since many see Microsoft’s decision as a 100% commercial strategy. «The decision to restrict security updates after a payment wall is a business decision, not technical,» says Gutterman. In the end, those who pass through the box will receive updates for three years.
With less than four months for the end of the support, many foot users and companies are totally trapped between spending money, risking without protection or looking for alternatives outside the Microsoft ecosystem.
«Your PC is perfect, you don’t need to buy a new one»
Not only users, experts are also burning and are very clear that Microsoft is going too far with that idea that your PC will be obsolete if you do not take the passage immediately to Windows 11.
Of course, it is not about continuing to use your Windows 10 computer without security support, because that would be catastrophic for the system, not only for operation and performance, but also for your information safety or malware that could come.
But it is that Windows 11 does not have to be the only option for your PC, since you have a lot of alternatives that are very similar and that you can surely meet your expectations. Experts recommend that Linux’s distributions be considered, which is much better than run out of protection, while they are not operating systems that require high resources.
You also have other options such as the new Linux Lite 7.4, which is presented as an alternative to take into account, since it is light, easy to use and with everything necessary to work.
Best of all, you don’t need to be an expert. This version of Linux comes to be used from the first moment, with all the applications that most need: browser, office suite, multimedia player and even photo editor. All this in a system that consumes less resources than Windows XP.
The numbers speak for themselves and while Windows 11 demands a modern PC with state -of -the -art processor, 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage, Linux Lite works up to PC of the 2000s with only 1 GHz processor, 768 MB of RAM and 8 GB of hard drive.
With all this on the table, the situation for a large number of foot users is authentic chaos and anger. Many do not want and can change their computer just to continue receiving updates. And although Microsoft offers the ‘patch’ of the ESU for free for a year, this, of course, is only to put a little shot that does not stop bleeding.
