Vitalik Buterin shared a series of reflections outlining his vision for where Ethereum is headed.
In his words, the network no longer faces structural limits to combine extreme scalability with decentralizationas long as the physical, economic and social restrictions imposed by the real world are respected.
“Increasing bandwidth is safer than reducing latency,” Vitalik wrote on January 8 in X.
As he explained, the system called peer-to-peer data availability sampling (PeerDAS), implemented with Fusaka last December, and zero-knowledge proofs (ZK-proofs) They allow Ethereum to scale “thousands of times” compared to the current state.
Scale without breaking decentralization
In the words of Vitalik, “there is no law of physics that prevents combining extreme scale with decentralization.”
Vitalik clarified that this statement is supported by previous analyzes on data fragmentation, before and after the sharding (fragmentation of the network into coordinated parts).
In this framework, he stressed that the central problem is no longer whether Ethereum can scale, but rather how to do it without compromising its openness.
The limit appears, according to Vitalik, when an attempt is made to excessively reduce latency, that is, the time it takes the network to react. That’s where inevitable restrictions come into play for the co-founder of Ethereum:
- the speed of light.
- the need for nodes to exist in rural areas and outside data centers.
- the protection of resistance to censorship and the anonymity of those who validate the network.
On the other hand, he introduced an economic argument. He noted that if operating a validator node were significantly more profitable in a specific city (for example, if doing so outside of New York reduced revenue by 10%), validation would tend to concentrate there over time.
For Vitalik, Ethereum must pass what he called the “abandonment test”: it cannot rely on constant social readjustments to remain decentralized.
Still, he maintained that it is possible to reduce latency moderately without major concessions. He mentioned improvements in peer-to-peer networking and message propagation, as well as designs with fewer nodes per validation interval.
That, the Russian-Canadian claimed, could achieve improvements of between three and six times, bringing times to a range of two to four seconds.

The heartbeat of the world and the role of Ethereum’s second layers
Vitalik summed up this idea with a powerful metaphor: “Ethereum is not the server of a global video game; It is the heartbeat of the world.
By this, one could deduce that he meant that the base network should not be optimized for ultra-fast applications, but to be a stable, secure and decentralized reference.
Consequently, he explained that applications that need greater speed will have to use components outside the main chain. Therefore, he stated that second layer (L2) networks will continue to be essential even in a highly scaled Ethereum.
Not only for speed, but also for customization and use cases that demand even more scale.
He even went further by introducing the variable of artificial intelligence. According to Vitalik, if an AI thinks a thousand times faster than a human, its “subjective speed of light” would be just 300 kilometers per second.
In that scenario, he said, applications will emerge that require local networks, limited to a city or even a building. These chains, he stated, will necessarily be layers 2.
Ethereum as BitTorrent and as Linux
In his second post, Vitalik Buterin compared Ethereum to BitTorrent and Linux: open systems that combine decentralization, scale, and mass adoption.
He argued that the network should serve both users seeking autonomy and large organizations, where “distrust” translates into reduced counterparty risk.
That balance, he stated, defines the essence of Ethereum.
