Why do they call you, you answer and hang up without saying anything?

Surely it has happened to you more than once. They call you – 99% of you know it’s a teleoperator -, you answer and suddenly the call ends, they hang up on you and you’re left with the feeling that they’ve taken you for a ride despite doing them the favor and answering them. Known as ghost calls, don’t panic, because you are not the only one this happens to.

What is hidden behind these types of calls? The truth is that it makes more sense than you think and no, there is no reason to be scared. In reality it could be due to two reasons. On the one hand, these are done en masse, and if there are not enough staff or resources to handle them all simultaneously, connections are automatically cut when you respond.

On the other hand, some teleoperators use these ghost calls to validate active telephone numbers. Once you answer, your number is registered as active and can later be used for marketing campaigns.

Of course, be very careful with the so-called ‘wangiri’. This Japanese word, which literally means “call and hang up,” is a type of scam in which scammers make short calls from an international number and hang up before you have a chance to answer. The goal here is for you to see that you have a missed call and, out of curiosity or concern, decide to return it, resulting in charges to your account.

They call you, a robot says “goodbye” and they hang up

This is another technique also widely used by teleoperators. You receive a call from an unknown number that begins with 9111 and, after a few seconds of silence, you hear a robotic voice say the word “goodbye” before hanging up on you.

In this case, the same thing happens as mentioned before. Robocalls are a strategy used by call center companies to make mass calls to phone numbers found in their database.

Why, you might ask, is the word “goodbye” heard before they hang up on these calls? The answer to this question remains a mystery, but it is most likely an automated recording that plays once the system detects the time you answered the call or if there are no operators available to assist you.

With all this, The only thing that can help you is to take note of these tips: Never call back, sign up for the Robinson List to at least avoid being harassed, even if they continue to do so, and if you see that the same number has already called you several times using the same technique, use blocking indiscriminately.

There are also applications designed to identify and block suspicious or unwanted calls. These apps can automatically filter calls from numbers known for robocalls or fraudulent activity.
