Aena airports exceeded 369.4 million passengers in 2024, 8.5% more

Aena airports (composed of 46 airports and two heliports in Spain, London-Luton Airport and 17 airports in Brazil) have closed the year 2024 with 369,444,029 passengers, 8.5% more than in 2023; They managed 3,203,747 aircraft movements, 7.1% more than in 2023; and transported 1,421,640 tons of merchandise, 18.1% more than last year.

As reported by the airport manager, in December 2024 alone, 26,925,911 passengers passed through Aena airports (7.2% more than in 2023); 239,377 aircraft movements were recorded (+5.7%); and 124,571 tons of merchandise were transported, 11.5% more than in 2023.

In 2024, the year with the most global operations for Aena was recorded and in 18 infrastructures: Gran Canaria, Málaga-Costa del Sol, Palma de Mallorca, Alicante, Elche Miguel Hernández, Tenerife North-City of La Laguna, César Manrique, Lanzarote, Seville, Menorca, Ibiza, Santiago-Rosalía de Castro, La Palma, Burgos, Córdoba, Logroño, El Hierro, Tenerife South, Fuerteventura and Son Bonet.

Aena is already analyzing and, in some cases, has already launched “the necessary investments to guarantee, as it has done until now, that the infrastructure is correctly sized for future demand,” the company says.

“Sustainable growth in airport, economic and environmental terms of airports contributes to the generation of wealth and employment in the territories they serve,” explains Aena. In that sense, “the definition of needs is rigorously technical”.

The investments will be discussed at the proposal of Aena in the mandatory consultation process with the airlines, a procedure regulated by Law 18 of 2014 in which, among others, the National Markets and Competition Commission and the General Directorate intervene. of Civil Aviation. Once proposed to the users, the airlines, and after being shared with the Airport Coordination Committees of the different territories, in which representatives of the regional and local governments and the economic and social sectors of the regions participate, the will be reflected in Aena’s investment plan.

Freight traffic

Regarding freight traffic, in 2024 the Aena network in Spain as a whole has recorded the year with the highest total freight traffic to date. By airports, the one with the highest cargo volume was Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas, with 766,818 tons, 19.2% more compared to 2023. This represents the year with the highest total commercial merchandise traffic in the history of Madrid’s infrastructure, as well as the Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport, with 181,688 tons (+16.1%), which has also registered a historical cargo record.

They are followed by the airports of Zaragoza, which registered 181,409 tons (+39.7%), and Vitoria, with 70,490 tons (-1.7%). In December 2024, 21,703,760 travelers have passed through Aena airports in Spain (7.5% more than in the same month of 2023); 188,850 aircraft movements were recorded (+7.1%) and 110,980 tons of merchandise were transported, 11.3% more than in the same period in 2023.
