Apple is close to taking a decisive step in the evolution of its screens. The company plans to adopt OLED technology in five of its main product lines within just two yearsa transition that will start this year with the redesigned MacBook Pro M6.
This move marks the abandonment of mini-LED in laptops for the first time and reinforces Apple’s strategy of unifying the visual experience across almost its entire catalog.
Thus, the MacBook Pro M6 It will be the first model to debut tandem OLED, a high-end solution that promises greater sustained brightness, better energy efficiency and deeper blacks. However, this improvement will not reach the entire range, as Apple will reserve the new panel, along with touch capabilities and a redesign that includes a renewed hinge, for the M6 Pro and M6 Max versions, which will mean higher prices.
According to DigiTimes, OLED deployment will continue between 2026 and 2028 towards iPad mini, iPad Air, iMac and MacBook Air. Not all devices will receive the same type of panel. For example, the next iPad mini 8 will opt for an LTPS OLED, instead of the more advanced LTPO.
Samsung would be the exclusive supplier of these panels, thus reinforcing its central role in Apple’s supply chain. In fact, this information coincides with the start of mass production of OLED panels by the South Korean manufacturer, intended for both the iPad mini 8 and the MacBook Pro M6 family.
The MacBook Air is also on the roadmap to receive OLED, although its transition will be slower. Apple would have delayed the adoption of this technology in its most affordable laptops until 2029.
The plan confirms Apple’s intention to bring OLED to almost its entire ecosystem, although in a phased and selective manner, conditioned by costs and the preparation of its supply chain.
