Official support for Windows 10 has come to an end, and with this, users who decide to keep this operating system, whether voluntarily or due to hardware limitations, will be left completely unprotected.
Luckily, Microsoft has clarified that Microsoft Defender will continue to receive updates, even on legacy systems like Windows 10, “to the extent possible.”
This means that detection and protection capabilities will continue to improve, although those functions that depend on features not present in Windows 10 will have a limited impact.
In practical terms, computers will be less secure than if they were running Windows 11, but having Defender still offers an optimal level of protection.
The company will continue to provide security intelligence updates for the built-in antivirus until October 2028.
Nevertheless, Defender alone does not guarantee complete protection against all threatsespecially without the advanced detection and response capabilities available in corporate environments.
Microsoft recommends upgrading to Windows 11 to maintain the highest level of security. For those unable to migrate, the safest alternative is Windows 10 with Extended Updates (ESU), which ensure continuous delivery of critical patches.
