Google is developing an immersive version of Reading Mode in Chrome, which will allow users to open articles in full screen, very similar to Microsoft Edge’s Reader Mode.
The goal is to improve concentration when reading long content on the web, offering a cleaner and more focused environment. Chrome currently has a basic reading mode that simplifies web pages by removing ads, sidebars, and other distracting elements, and includes support for reading aloud.
The new immersive version goes further. Instead of opening into a side panel, occupies the entire page, showing only the main text and images, transforming Chrome into a quiet reading space free of superfluous elements.
This feature in Microsoft Edge has proven popular, so it’s no surprise that Google wants to implement this experience in its browser. This comprehensive interface also improves readability, which is especially useful for users who spend a lot of time reading on the web.
Until now, in Chrome’s traditional reading mode, users could right-click on a page and select “Open in reading mode” to simplify viewing. It is not yet clear whether the new immersive mode will replace the current option or coexist with it.
With this update, Chrome will offer a more powerful tool for reading, working, and browsing without interruptions, eliminating distractions and providing an experience similar to Edge’s reader mode.
