Iran has implemented a major measure that reconfigures its national security paradigm and its strategy in the international arena.
And after suffering serious navigation problems during the June 2025 conflict, the Tehran government has officially disconnected the US GPS system to integrate its entire infrastructure into the Chinese BeiDou system.
This maneuver responds to a vulnerability detected when positioning signals failed across the board, affecting both aviation and military assets in Iranian airspace.
BeiDou vs. GPS
The BeiDou system was born as China’s alternative to GPS dominance and reached its global capacity in 2020. Unlike the American network, which operates with about 31 satellites, the Chinese constellation exceeds 50 units in orbit.
This higher density provides a more robust signal and better availability in difficult geographical areas, such as the mountainous regions of Iranian territory.
One of the most relevant differences is the architecture of their orbits. While GPS offers uniform global coverage, BeiDou includes satellites in geostationary orbits that reinforce precision in Asia and the Middle East.
In addition, the Chinese system allows the exchange of short text messages between devices and satellites. This function is vital for the military command in Iran, since it allows communication and positioning to be maintained even if terrestrial telephone or internet networks are completely disabled by cyber attacks.
It is a military and political impact
In this way, Iran stops depending on a system whose ability to cut or degrade has precedents in conflict contexts, and replaces it with one controlled by a strategic partner, China.
The improved accuracy of its missile and drone systems, along with the ability to maintain secure communication without relying on ground networks, changes the logic of deterrence in the Persian Gulf.
The move also reinforces the Iran-China axis, especially after the 2021 strategic agreement, which already provided for Iranian access to BeiDou’s high-precision signals.

For Iran, the operation presupposes greater autonomy from the United States, but also new risks. Dependence on BeiDou links its national security to the continuity of Beijing’s interests, with no guarantee that the Chinese system is immune to future pressures.
In this way, satellite navigation ceases to be a neutral service and becomes a vector of geopolitical control, which countries increasingly monitor and diversify.
