Telefónica leads 5G traffic at Christmas with an increase of 80%

Telefónica, the leading telecommunications company, has reported a significant increase in the use of its network during Christmas Eve and Christmas 2025. Specifically, 5G data traffic experienced an impressive increase of 80% compared to the previous year, thus consolidating Telefónica’s position as a leader in 5G technology in Spain.

5G network coverage and preparation

With coverage that covers 94% of the population, Telefónica has proven to have a solid network prepared to meet the growing demand of users, especially during times of high activity such as the Christmas holidays.

Global data traffic growth

Global data traffic on Telefónica’s network increased by 18% compared to the same period of the previous year. Despite remaining stable during the festivities, the peak of consumption was reached at 10:00 p.m. on December 25.

Busiest times

Between 3:00 p.m. on December 24 and 3:00 a.m. on the 25th, the moment of greatest activity was recorded at 4:00 p.m. on the 24th, coinciding with the massive sending of congratulatory messages, photos and videos among users.

Voice traffic and its relevance

Despite the rise of digital communications, voice traffic also had an increase of 1.2% compared to 2024, demonstrating that it remains an important channel for Christmas greetings. The highest volume of calls occurred at 12:00 p.m. on the 24th, with a second peak at 6:00 p.m.
