What is the difference between the HDMI ARC port and the rest of the HDMI connections?

Any TV today, even mid-range and low-end ones, come with several HDMI ports, but not all offer the same functions. Some carry labels like ARC or even eARC, and that’s when all the doubts begin to arise.

The back of a TV usually looks like a technical panel with multiple inputs, with USB, digital optical, Ethernet, auxiliary outputs and, of course, several HDMIs. This last one is the most used to connect external devices such as consoles, players, computers or sound bars.

But although all HDMI ports look the same at first glance and even in name, there are key differences that mark how they work and what they are for.

Some versions only allow you to send images, others also receive sound, and some more advanced ones manage high fidelity audio signals. If you don’t know which one you’re using, you may be wasting part of your television’s potential or sound system.

What is an HDMI port for and why are there so many

HDMI has become the standard connector for almost everything related to video and sound. Replaced old scarts, RCA or VGA connectors, and allows you to transmit digital image and audio cleanly and in high quality.

In this way, you can watch content from streaming platforms such as Netflix, HBO or YouTube directly on the Smart TV and send audio to sound bar without the need for additional cables.

With ARC, the HDMI port becomes a bi-directional channelbut only for audio. The picture continues to flow from the source to the TV as always, but now the sound can return along the same path.

This feature is especially useful if you have multiple devices connected to the TV and want centralize audio in a single system. You avoid messy cables, save space and facilitate control with a single remote control. If you use a sound bar, the most logical thing is to take advantage of the connection to take advantage of it.
